The Palouse Scenic Byway is a breathtaking road trip through the rolling hills and farmland of eastern Washington, offering some of the most unique landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Beginning near Spokane and winding through small rural towns, the drive showcases sweeping wheat fields, historic grain elevators, scenic backroads, and dramatic panoramic viewpoints. The region is especially beautiful in late spring when the hills are vivid green, or in late summer when the fields turn golden during harvest season. One of the highlights of the route is Steptoe Butte State Park, where visitors can drive to the summit for spectacular 360-degree views over the Palouse countryside. From above, the hills resemble waves stretching endlessly across the horizon, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in Washington State. Along the drive, charming farming communities like Rosalia, Garfield, Palouse, and Colfax provide opportunities to stop for local cafes, historic sites, and small-town character. The route also includes a dramatic change in scenery with a visit to Palouse Falls State Park. Here, the gentle farmland suddenly gives way to rugged basalt cliffs and a stunning waterfall plunging nearly 200 feet into a deep canyon. The contrast between the soft rolling hills and the harsh canyon landscape makes this one of the most memorable stops on the trip. Scenic pullouts and quiet country roads throughout the area make the drive ideal for photography and leisurely exploration. The journey typically ends in Pullman or nearby Uniontown, where visitors can enjoy local restaurants, wineries, breweries, and outdoor recreation. The Palouse Scenic Byway is best experienced over two or three days, allowing time to enjoy the viewpoints, small towns, and peaceful atmosphere that make the region so special. With minimal traffic, constantly changing scenery, and some of the most picturesque farmland in America, the Palouse offers a road trip experience unlike anywhere else in the country.
